On May 28, 2026, in the city of Murmansk, on the Day of the Murmansk Region, at a meeting of the regional Duma, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Grigoryevich Matishov was awarded the title of "Honorary Citizen of the Murmansk Region."

The scientist was awarded a high regional award for his many years of professional achievements, significant contribution to the development of the region and strengthening the authority of the Murmansk Region in the Russian Federation.

Gennady Matishov is an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Researcher and Scientific Director of the Federal Research Center "Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences". Previously, he headed the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute, and also served as an adviser to the Governor on science, technology, politics and ecology.

The scientist is one of the leading experts in the field of biooceanology, ecology and geology of the seas of the western Arctic. Under his leadership, numerous high-latitude expeditions were organized, as well as studies of chemical pollution and radioactivity in the Arctic seas and on the territory of the Kola Peninsula.

The award of the honorary title was a recognition of Gennady Matishov's outstanding contribution to the development of Russian science, the study of the Arctic and the socio-economic development of the region.
